Diary

6/28
Fasting blood sugar was 80! Very exciting as this is a perfect number. Even better news, I've reduced my insulin amount by 75%. I was taking 40 units and last night I only used 10. Progress....

6/25/16
We went to the movies yesterday.  I had to sneak in some popcorn.  I brought the skinnypop brand, so 4 cups was only 12 carbs. With keto fat and salt is allowed so I drenched themy and it was really good.
Fasting 81.  And the great news, I'm down 1.5lbs. Down to 217.6
6/23/16
I was up a little bit today, 219.4. Not really concerned about it. I lowered my levemir to 20 units last night. I don't want to have any lows so I've got to keep an eye on it. My fasting BS was 79 today, need to back off even more tonight.

This is good though, that's the goal to get off levemir and then eventually get off the pills.

6/22/16
Weighed in at 218.9 today! Down a couple lbs already! Fasting BS was 89 which is perfect. I lowered my levemir to 30 units last night.

Here is what my day looked like ------------------------------------------------------->
Only 47 carbs, lots of calories though. It's tough to keep fat up and cals down.

6/20/16
First real day of keto. For breakfast I had chicken breast with egg substitute. I added sour cream and guacamole for fat. Off to Chipotle for lunch, I had a salad with double carnitas and light dressing. I wasn't hungry for dinner so I went to bed early and skipped dinner (which is ok with this diet).
Calories: 1837    Carbs: 52g

6/19/16
After a little more research I've learned that I just need to be UNDER 50 carbs, which is much more reasonable. I believe I can do this, I'm starting Monday and let's see how it goes.

6/18/16
Well this was absolutely brutal. I've kept my carbs to 19 for the day but it's been horrible. Cravings left and right, I want carbs so bad. Not sure how they do this.

My buddy Paul has been on the Keto diet. He has absolutely killed it, he is down 40+ lbs since I challenged him last year. He works out with me at Truhit but hasn't been doing the Herbalife diet. He is losing around 5lbs per week. Well seeing is believing, so I'm going to give keto a try.

From the research I've made this is how it works. The goal is to remove carbs from your diet. Doing this puts your body into Ketosis, which makes it search for food to eat. Since there aren't any carbs for it to eat, it starts to eat your fat. Since I have lots of fat to spare there will be plenty to burn.

I'm going to do a trial diet this weekend to see how it goes. I'm logging all my food in myfitnesspal app. I also use a fitbit to track my steps and activity. I will continue my fitness routine (4 to 5 trips to Truhit per week).

Introduction

Hey there. My name is Kris, I'm from Phoenix, AZ and for the last 11 years I've had type 2 diabetes. I've gone through just about every emotion you can imagine, from denial, to self pitty (I'm going to die young thoughts), to maintenance, to education, to ACTION!

Leading up to my diagnosis, I weighed about 250lbs. I lost about 10 lbs for no reason. I had an insatiable thirst and was urinating about 10 times a day. We knew something was wrong so I made an appointment. As these are very common symptoms, the nurse read my blood sugars and I was 350!

When I was first diagnosed I thought it was a death sentence. I couldn't believe I had this disease that has hurt so many people in my family. My Uncle Bobby died from complication from diabetes. All I could do is feel sorry for myself, I wasn't ready to start to help myself.

So I started reading all the books on how to reverse diabetes. There seemed to be a lot of tricks and tips, but nothing really sank in. I visited a nutritionist and she made it seem like low carb and special diets wouldn't really help. She just emphasized a clean well balanced diet, which just pissed me off. I didn't want to hear that, I wanted to hear that if I ate this and that I would get rid of it.

So over the years I've gone through a few different medicines and diets. Nothing really helped too much, I've used metformin, victoza, levemir, and now invocana. I'm currently taking levemir and invocana. Most of these worked but nothing works as well as diet and exercise (damnit!). When I keep my diet in check (low carbs) my blood sugars are much better.

I couple years ago I decided my fat gut was to blame. It's well known that stomach fat is very bad for you and can lead to diabetes, so I've made it my goal to get rid of the gut. I joined a couple gym's and started my weight loss goal. After a year I went from 240 to 214, then back up to 222. I've maintained at 220 from late 2015 through mid 2016.

                                             2007                                                       2008

I've made yet another decision to lose this belly fat for good. It may reverse my diabetes, it may not. What it will do is make me healthier and hopefully live a longer, more active life with my wife and kids.

I will be posting about my progress, what's worked and what hasn't. Hopefully this blog will help inspire more people out there to get active, lose weight, and hopefully reverse or prevent type 2 diabetes.
